West Palm Beach Water Feature

Stainless steel grating experts, Paige Stainless Fabrication, has joined forces again with international artist Jeppe Hein, to create his latest interactive water installation in Florida, USA

Paige Stainless was approached by Robert Banovic, Jeppe Hein Studio’s Head of Architecture, following the success of their first design collaboration for a stainless steel fabricated interactive water installation in Perth in 2012.

The success of the Perth project was partly due to the adaptability of PAIGE STAINLESS HEELGUARD grating. For the latest project, success would hinge on whether it was possible to curve the grating to exact radii to fulfil the artist’s vision of an interactive water maze featuring two intersecting ellipses.

With more than 26 years’ experience fabricating bespoke water features, Paige Stainless has successfully curved their grating product for many different architect-designed projects around Australia. Although the sheer size of this new project presented some challenges, the skilled design team and fabricating craftsmen at Paige were able to produce a high-quality sample for submission.

The interlocking ellipse design meant that the radius of each panel was different for each segment of the two shapes, and that the 450mm wide panels had to curve with precision. Where the two shapes intersected, the joining panels had to be mitred to create a seamless transition.

On completion, each segment of the feature was meticulously checked for accuracy and quality. From here it was a matter of careful packing and transport logistics, and each piece of the artwork was individually packed in custom made boxes by Paige’s skilful QC and despatch team, and then loaded into specially made treated timber crates to be shipped directly to Miami.

Although the install was delayed due to a Hurricane Dorian, the grates arrived in perfect condition and were transformed into the water feature. Once again, the Jeppe Hein Studio was very pleased with the quality of the workmanship and the ease in which the individual pieces fit together.
