Paige Stainless proudly involved in world-class integrated resort development
Queen’s Wharf is a world-class integrated resort development. Spanning 12 acres of CBD land, the precinct is set to be a hub of tourism, entertainment and leisure. Aside from the 1,000+ premium hotel rooms and up to 2000 residential apartments, the development features new and exciting retail and food and beverage outlets, 7.5 hectares of public space, 9 restored heritage buildings, a pedestrian bridge connecting Queen’s Wharf with South Bank, and a Sky Deck 100 metres above William Street… among many other attributes.
Set to open in the later part of this year, at Paige Stainless, we are only starting this journey. We are proud to have been chosen by AXIS Plumbing due to our superior presence in the marketplace and having the reputation of 31 years’ experience behind us. Our superior product and design constituents were shining brightly in the eyes of the decision makers as to who would be chosen for the job.
Grades 304 and 316 stainless steel will be used on the project. We will be manufacturing a curved PAIGE STAINLESS HEELGUARD® system to follow the form of the buildings and pool. Load class in some areas needs to handle CLASS D, so the scope of manufacture contains all the hydraulic and mechanical aspects of our grating systems.
PROJECT SNAPSHOT

Queen’s Wharf Brisbane: Construction & Drainage FAQs
1. What is the scale and cost of this development?
- A $3.6 billion mixed-use precinct spanning 26 ha (land and riverfront), including hotels, residences, retail, public spaces, and heritage refurbishments.
2. Who handled the structural and drainage systems?
- Structural: Demolition and excavation by Probuild, main build and super-basements by Multiplex with engineering support from Hera, Robert Bird Group, and Bornhorst & Ward.
- Drainage: Paige Stainless, commissioned via AXIS Plumbing, manufactured custom HEELGUARD® stainless steel drainage systems including curved trays.
3. How deep is the basement and what excavation was required?
- A six-level basement, reaching ~26 m deep, involved removing over 400,000 m³ of earth—approximately 160 Olympic pools—using diaphragm walls, piling, and rock anchors.
4. What are the key drainage features of Paige Stainless at the site?
- Custom curved HEELGUARD® wedge-wire channels made from AISI 304/316 stainless steel, designed to follow the site’s architectural curves with Class D load capacity.
- Heel-safe 5 mm apertures, slip resistance, and custom radius fitting ideal for complex layouts.
5. Why use curved stainless steel instead of standard polymer channels?
- Aesthetic integration: Seamless alignment with curved architecture (pool decks, walkways, Sky Deck).
- Structural and safety advantages: Built to Australian/NZ standards (AS3996), slip-resistant, wheelchair- and cycle-friendly.
- Durability: Superior corrosion resistance and longevity, especially in riverfront environments.
6. Where is Paige Stainless’ curved drainage utilized on-site?
- Curved building elevations and pool edges, where radius-matching channels manage surface water while maintaining form and function.
- Precision manufactured with pre-welded outlets to ensure tight tolerances and simplified installation.
7. What technical specs define Paige Stainless HEELGUARD®?
- 304/316 stainless steel with custom widths (100–300 mm), depths, lengths, and radii.
- 5 mm apertures, Class A–D load rating, slip-resistant, wheelchair-compliant, toe-safe wedge-wire profile.
- Fully welded trays with lifting handles, perimeter bars, and integrated outlet and end cap fittings.
8. How does this benefit the overall precinct design?
- Enables precise water management while maintaining upscale aesthetic.
- Supports long-term performance with minimal maintenance and high durability.
- Enhances safety and accessibility, meeting public space requirements.
